A study was conducted at Addenbrooke’ Hospital in Cambridge, UK, to determine the frequency of fish consumption among 22,000 middle-aged and older men and women, of whom 517 had diabetes.
The researchers discovered that diabetics who consumed an average of less than one serving of fish per week had four times the risk of microalbuminuria compared to those who had about two servings.
Microalbuminuria is the leakage of alumin into the urine by the kidneys.
In type 1 diabetes, this condition indicates renal failure. It also points to ischaemic heart disease among type 2 diabetes patients.
